Cycling the Thousand Hills

Rwanda

Experience the land of a thousand hills with almost endless roads crisscrossing this unspoiled country. Exploring Rwanda’s countryside on a bike is an authentic and rewarding way to interact with the rural population, with a huge dose of natural beauty.

In association with our partners we have created a one of a kind and very exciting cycling tours to date – in Africa! We will be riding new heights while the global cycling spotlight will shine on the vibrant city of Kigali from September 21st to 28th, 2025, to host the prestigious UCI Road World Championships for the first time on the African continent in the event’s 103-year history.

On our first day we will cover the same 15.1 km circuit plus an extra mid-race 42.5km extension circuit as the men’s elite race which includes two short climbs and continuous rolling and testing roads including to climb the infamous Mur du Kigal, the cobbled climb that kicks up at 11 %. After two days of scenic cycling in the outer urban area of Kigali with its mighty volcanoes we will hit the road towards Kinigi on our third riding day.

Kinigi is in the middle of the Volcanoes National Park – globally renouwn for travellers to have close encounter with mountain gorillas. T he Rwandan park is located in the northwest of the country and this very rewarding ride to Kinigi will be one of the highlights of your visit to Rwanda! To explore the Rwandan Northern Province we will take you on an out-and back ride to showcases some of the best views in Northern Rwanda. You’ll be treated to views of Rwanda’s spectacular volcanoes as you head towards the twin lakes Ruhondo and Burera and then all around Mount Kabuye, the tallest freestanding mountain in Rwanda.

Arguably one of Rwanda’s best, or at least best known, road bike routes, the Kivu Belt Road traverses the length of Lake Kivu along Rwanda’s Western border. Our destination for the fourth stage Is Lake Kivu, one of the deepest lakes in the world and a Great Lake of Africa. To get there you will enjoy a magnificent ride along a chain of volcanoes, through bamboo forests, remote villages and banana plantations before we reach Kibuye, where we will stay at Umurobyi Lodge for the next three days. Followed by our first rest day at Lake Kivu we will hit the southern part of the Kivu Belt Road which is more rugged with more and shorter climbs – a true roller coaster to reach our highlight of the day with the final climb into the Nyungwe Rainforest. A magical riding experience which provides us with panoramic views of the Lake coastline, bright green tea fields and coffee plantations and an insight into daily Rwandan life before we return to Kibuye by boat. T he next morning we say good bye to Lake Kivu and cycle back to Rwanda’s capital of Kigali. We will meet up on the evening for a farewell dinner with a view to Kigali to celebrate all the climbing we have accomplished!
